Umbria

Known as the "Green Heart of Italy", lies between Tuscany, Le Marche and Lazio. It is the only region in Italy that is not bordered by sea or a foreign country. The region's forests and farms are famous for their truffles, olive oil and pork, the town of Deruta for its painted earthenware; Orvieto and Torgiano for their wines; and Assisi for its wonderful basilica and Giotto frescos.

Within a 40 mile (60 km) radius of Castiglion Fosco are the ancient hill towns of Gubbio, Spello, Cortona, Spoleto, Orvieto and Todi, each with its medieval centre. Perugia, the region's capital, is 15 miles (25 km) away, a stylish university city with striking medieval architecture, important Etruscan remains and major works of art.

Castiglion Fosco

The apartment is in the small medieval village of Castiglion Fosco 350 meters above sea level in the Comune Di Piegaro, It overlooks a valley flanked by wooded hills, chestnut trees, olive groves and vine yards. In the summer months the valley is a sea of yellow sunflowers. The scenery is stunning and unspoilt. The view to the rear looks across the valley to the village of Collebaldo.

Castiglion Fosco, with its typical Umbrian church and 14th century cylindrical lookout tower that is lit up at night, is the larger village and merges in to Collebaldo both are set into the hillside.
