The car collection and drop-off point is in car park B, level 4, round the corner from the car rental offices. When returning the car, fill up at the Pisana service station on the Rome ring road Grande Raccordo Anulare (GRA) between junctions 33 and 32. (Fiumicino Airport Junction 30 GRA)
When returning the car, fill up at the Casilina service station on the GRA between junctions 17 and 18. (Ciampino Airport Junction 23 GRA) Collection and drop off area is on the left as you enter the Airport just past a petrol filling station. (The filling station is not always manned. It is 24 hour but cash only). Just drive up to the barrier and it will open. Return keys to desk in airport terminal or staff on hand in the return area.
You will need transport while at Castiglion Fosco, either your own car or a hire car. Castiglion Fosco is 3 km from Tavernelle, the nearest sizeable town, and is not served by public transport. If flying, car hire is available from Rome airports (Fiumicino or Ciampino), Pisa or Florence airports. Follow instructions below (arriving from the south for Rome or from the north for Pisa or Florence). There are notes and links on car hire below.
The most convenient railway station is at Chiusi; Avis has a car hire office just opposite the station entrance. Use the instructions below (arriving from the north) for directions from Chiusi to Castiglion Fosco.
Take the autostrada A1 north from Rome Junction 10 on the GRA sign posted Firenze, and leave at Fabro (approx. 1 hours drive). Turn left after the pay booth, across the river and railway. At the roundabout turn left onto the SR71/SS71 towards Città della Pieve. After about 9 km, turn right in Monteleone d'Orvieto, signposted to Piegaro. Follow this winding road to Piegaro, skirting round the old town of Piegaro and down the hill to the "T" junction with the SS220 (Città della Pieve-Perugia road). Turn right to Tavernelle (3 km). It is about 16 km in all from Monteleone to Tavernelle.
Follow instructions below from Tavernelle to Castiglion Fosco
Take the A1 south, and leave at the junction marked Chiusi/Chianciano T. After leaving the pay booth, turn right onto the SS146 towards Chiusi. Follow the road to Chiusi. Keep straight on at the traffic lights to the old town, and go down the hill. Keep bearing left at two Y-junctions (following the main road, marked to Perugia), and take the elevated road round Stazione di Chiusi and across the River Chiana. Enter Po Bandino. At the Y-junction do not follow round left to Perugia, but go straight on to Città della Pieve on the winding SR71. When you reach Città old town (5 km) bear right and follow the road round the old town, keeping on the SR71. About 0.5 km after the sign showing you have left the town, turn left onto the SS220, signposted to Perugia and Tavernelle. The road is very twisty for about 6 km, until you reach the junction with the road up to Piegaro. Continue straight on for a further 5 km to Tavernelle.
Follow instructions below from Tavernelle to Castiglion Fosco
Leave the A1 at the junction marked Val di Chiano, signposted to Perugia. Take the A1-Perugia Superstrada towards Perugia. After about 20 km, at the first junction, turn off at the SR71 to Castiglione del Lago. Go left at the T-junction after the slip road, and follow the SR71 to Castiglione (9 km). Go through the town; the old town is on your left. About 7 km from the crossroads at the centre of Castiglione del Lago turn right onto the SS599 (signposted to Tavernelle and Panicale). Follow the road past Panicale down the hill to Tavernelle (12 km). Turn left when you reach the main road, into Tavernelle.
Follow instructions below from Tavernelle to Castiglion Fosco
Drive into Tavernelle, past Mr Overs Pizzagrill (right side, on roundabout with an English phone box in the car park); straight through roundabout the road bends around the town centre. Through a set of traffic lights, straight through the second roundabout and take the next turning on the right, just before the sign showing that you are about to leave Tavernelle, signposted Collebaldo, Castiglion Fosco, be careful the sign is on the right and you may miss it. Follow the road through Pevolè and Farneto and up the hill to Castiglion Fosco (3 km from the main road). When you enter Castiglion Fosco, the road narrows between two houses, take the next left immediately after, past the school on the right, down the hill and the apartment is at the bottom on the right. Via de Gasperi A. 16, 06060 Castiglion Fosco (PG). Car parking for two cars is opposite.
Leave Perugia on the SS220 to Città della Pieve (see below for directions into/out of Perugia). Go through Strozzacaponi, Castèl del Piano and Colle San Paolo. Just past the last of these you will pass the town sign for Tavernelle (about 17 km from the last roundabout on leaving Perugia), and then a blue road sign indicating a road to the left to Castiglion Fosco. The junction is about 0.5 km from the Tavernelle sign. Turn left onto the Castiglion Fosco road and follow the instructions above to Castiglion Fosco.
Getting to Perugia (also the Superstrada east to Collestrada, Assisi, etc): Go down to the main road at Tavernelle and turn right onto the SS220. Follow the road through Colle San Paolo, Castèl del Piano and Strozzacaponi. Just after the last of these you reach a roundabout, at which you go straight ahead. Enter the one-way system following the signs to Perugia and 'Centro'. Enter San Sistro (1 km), continuing to follow the one-way system and Perugia signs. Go straight on where signposted to Perugia, then go downhill to reach a large roundabout after a further 1 km. Turn left at the roundabout. After 0.5 km you reach a second roundabout.
Leaving Perugia (or the Superstrada from Collestrada, Assisi, etc): There are innumerable ways out of Perugia. Signs to the A1 (Rome, Florence) are useful but not infallible. The chances are you will meet (or find signs to) the A1-Perugia Superstrada. When you do, and then join it, westwards. If you are returning from Assisi or otherwise on roads east of Perugia, join the E45/SS3bis (Cesena-Todi) at Collestrada. After 2 km you need to filter off the E45/SS3bis (which carries on to Todi) to join the Superstrada (signposted A1 and Firenze).
Leave the Superstrada at the Madonna Alta junction - this is a tight turn immediately after a tunnel. Turn left at the T-junction with the main road. Go across the first roundabout (signposted to Città della Pieve). About 1 km from the Madonna Alta junction there is a second roundabout; turn right (signposted to San Sisto, not Città della Pieve!). Go up the hill and follow signs to Firenze and then Città della Pieve. Enter the one-way system, moving into the left lane to go round towards Città della Pieve and then into the right lane. At the roundabout, go straight across towards Città della Pieve. You are now on the SS220. Follow the instructions above to return to Tavernelle and then Castiglion Fosco.

Driving to/in Italy
Driving in Europe (web site offering information, legal requirements, route planner and more)
The AA (including up-to-date fuel prices across Europe)
There are rental offices for car hire at Fiumicino and Ciampino airports. Most can be pre-booked on line, see links below. Maps of Rome GRA and of Italy are given free with the car hire, ask at desk. If you are going to be touring around then a more detailed map may be a better option. These can be purchased at the services on the A1. You will need a new type driving licence (not the old green type) it is best to carry the new photo identity licence, but make sure you take both the plastic card and the paper version. Car hire is not permitted to drivers under 21 or if you have not held a licence for at least 2 years. You are now required by law to drive continuously night and day with dipped head lights on; most new cars lights will come on automatically when you start up. Please also note that the driver can be fined heavily if passengers are not wearing their seat belts. Also be careful of tail-gateing as this also carries a heavy fine. It may be worth looking on line for the do’s and don’ts, check Driving in Europe link above.
